Wallowing in your problems is no solution. Complaining and blaming others, while understandable, is ultimately ineffective. It is best to stop these self-defeating methods and take responsibility for your own life.

Despite the negativity of the past, the future is under your control. This may seem a daunting task, but there are a few steps that you can make to take control of your life.

Avoid making negative statements, and try to see the positive side of things. Speaking negatively is habitual, and it is something that reinforces a negative mental state. It is important to continually monitor speech to avoid this pitfall. It might be helpful to tell yourself positive messages, perhaps even place inspirational reminders in your surroundings to help reinforce this concept.

An important step in making positive changes in life is to change ones surroundings. A large part of this is to examine the types of people with which you interact. The people with which you surround yourself may bring you down emotionally. It may be difficult at first, but the less time you interact with negative people, the better chance you will have at a better outlook. If your friends or family fuel your unhappiness, then it is time to find and explore new associations.

When in the depths of depression, it is easy to try to avoid problems or escape by using drugs, alcohol, or other entertainments. This may provide a short-term solution, but is not a healthy avenue to permanent, positive change. Excessive escapes such as these may also be detrimental to health, so avoid them when possible.

Bodily health is connected to mental well being, so it is very important to take care of your physical well-being. Eating healthy foods, getting plenty of exercise, moderation in diet, and taking pride in your personal appearance will assist in helping you to feel better. These changes will help to reinforce your new mental outlook.

To help keep track of your progress, it may be helpful to keep a diary or journal. Making lists of positive aspects in your life, things for which to be thankful or recording happy occurrences will help you maintain a positive focus. Over a longer period, one can examine past entries to ascertain the progress made to date. This can be especially helpful at times when in doubt that any genuine progress was made. If at times you are upset, and have the urge to express yourself, write it all in the diary, rather than keeping things stored inside.

The most important step in order to stop complaining and blaming others is remembering to maintain a positive attitude at all times and speak positive things into other people's lives. Cease being critical, finding faults in others and instead look for positive traits. Be a good example, an element for change, and encourage others to avoid the trap of complaining and thinking negatively. Take control of your life, change negative habits, and be an inspiration for others to do the same.
